FUTA VC Seeks Stronger Conservation Policies To Tackles Wildlife Threats

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adenike Oladiji, has raised concern over the rising threats to wildlife and called for effective policies to safeguard biodiversity.

Speaking at the 7th annual conference of the Wildlife Society of Nigeria (WISON), held at the university campus in Akure, Oladiji, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Timothy Amos, said the global wildlife trade poses a serious danger, with direct exports worth about $1.8 billion and broader economic impacts estimated at between $4 billion and $20 billion annually.

She warned that the drive for profit from wildlife trade often clashes with the need to preserve natural habitats, stressing that over-exploitation remains one of the biggest risks to global conservation. According to her, unchecked exploitation could endanger ecosystems and biodiversity.

Oladiji expressed hope that discussions at the conference, themed “Globalisation and Wildlife Trade: Trends and Impacts on Conservation,” would help shape practical policies to strike a balance between economic gains and environmental protection.

She reaffirmed FUTA’s commitment to advancing research and solutions that protect both Nigeria’s and the world’s natural heritage.

Earlier, the Local Organising Committee chairman, Prof. Anthony Adekunle Ogunjinmi, urged participants to actively engage, ask critical questions, and build networks that extend beyond the conference.
