The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended its former Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh, for three months after he was accused of attempting to mobilise lawmakers to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The suspension was decided during Monday’s plenary following a motion moved by Terna Shimawua, who represents Vandeikya II State Constituency. He alleged that Dajoh secretly convened a meeting of legislators on August 21 and used the attendance list to initiate an impeachment move against the governor. Shimawua warned that the alleged plan, if not stopped, could have thrown the state into a political crisis.

Abu Umoru, representing Apa State Constituency, supported the motion and reminded the Assembly that similar actions had been condemned in the past. He argued that suspending Dajoh was necessary to protect the integrity of the legislature. Speaker Alfred Emberga then ruled for a three-month suspension, cutting short Shimawua’s initial demand for six months.

In response, Dajoh denied the allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. Through a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Zamber, the ex-Speaker insisted he had always maintained a cordial relationship with Governor Alia. He recalled that under his leadership, the Assembly had recently passed a vote of confidence in the governor.
The statement questioned why no other lawmakers were named in the alleged plot if the claim was true and criticised Shimawua for sponsoring the motion despite having never spoken in the House since his election. It further described the suspension as a political move influenced by external actors.
While acknowledging the suspension, Dajoh said he accepted it in good faith but urged the public to disregard what he called false claims. He maintained that his resignation as Speaker was for the sake of peace and stability in the state.
