Japan Visa Denial Sparks Backlash Against Tinubu Government

The Federal Government is facing criticism after Japan denied claims of creating a special visa category for skilled Nigerians.

The controversy began when the State House announced that Japanese authorities had agreed to introduce a visa program for young Nigerians to live and work in Kisarazu, with opportunities also extended to artisans and blue-collar workers seeking to improve their skills.

Japan’s foreign ministry quickly refuted the announcement, stating clearly that there were no plans to issue special visas for Nigerians or any African nationals. The clarification directly contradicted the information released by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information at the State House, on August 22.

The development drew sharp reactions from opposition parties, with the African Democratic Congress leading the criticism. The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the government’s announcement as misleading and said the contradiction from Japan embarrassed Nigeria on the international stage.

Abdullahi, a former minister of sports, accused the administration of chasing favorable publicity at the expense of credibility. He argued that spreading unverified claims damaged the country’s reputation abroad and fueled distrust at home.
