Educators and stakeholders have pointed to deep-rooted systemic problems as the cause of the sharp decline in the 2025 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination results.

The West African Examinations Council reported that only 754,545 of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exams in 23,554 schools obtained at least five credits, including core subjects. This represents just 38.32 percent, a major drop from 2024 performance levels.

Speaking in Abuja, founder of Exam Ethics Marshall International, Ike Onyechere, described the results as very poor but not surprising. He linked the failure to widespread malpractice, corruption, and logistical lapses such as power outages and weak oversight during the exams. He said these challenges were ignored during and after the examination period, leaving students disadvantaged.

Onyechere also criticised the continued operation of so-called “miracle centres,” notorious for aiding malpractice. In May 2025, the federal government ordered exam bodies to shut such centres and derecognise them for a set period, with JAMB leading the crackdown and WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB applying parallel sanctions.
He lamented that many students now rely heavily on cheating networks instead of studying, while efforts to publish and blacklist indicted schools and individuals have often been blocked. According to him, schools and supervisors involved in cheating are shielded, with the same officials repeatedly assigned to oversee exams despite their records.
Stakeholders say addressing these systemic flaws—logistics, supervision, and the culture of malpractice—is essential if future exam performances are to improve.
