A political group under the South-West wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will lead efforts to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

The Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, through its South-West coordinator Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, issued a statement supporting PDP leaders in the region who recently distanced themselves from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s public endorsement of Tinubu.

Olaniyi said the South-West PDP is committed to being a strong opposition force, accusing Wike of prioritizing personal interest over party principles. “The South-West PDP has shown clarity, courage, and commitment. This region will lead the charge to rescue Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.

He stressed that any PDP member backing Tinubu does not speak for the party. “It’s a personal decision and contradicts what the PDP stands for,” Olaniyi added.

The group also called for a return to the PDP’s founding values, saying the party needs figures like Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, who they described as a symbol of integrity and ideological consistency. “To defeat Tinubu in 2027, PDP must offer what APC doesn’t—integrity, principle, and leadership,” Olaniyi said.

The movement said it is mobilizing support across the South-West and beyond to build a united PDP ahead of the elections.

In a separate statement, PDP South-West spokesperson Sanya Atofarati criticized Wike’s actions, saying the former Rivers governor cannot speak for the party. He said PDP leaders in the region are working together to deny Tinubu a second term and return the PDP to power.
