IPOB Says Nnamdi Kanu Trial Is Unfair And Driven By Politics

The Indigenous People of Biafra has claimed that the trial of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is politically motivated.

The group made this known in a statement calling for fairness and transparency in the ongoing court proceedings.

The statement was released on Thursday by IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful. In it, the group said the Nigerian judiciary remains the last hope for those seeking justice, despite the challenges facing the system. IPOB urged the court to act independently and base its decisions on law and evidence.

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, who was brought back to Nigeria under controversial circumstances in 2021, has continued to draw local and global attention. IPOB pointed to a recent ruling by a court in Kenya which raised legal concerns over Kanu’s extradition. According to the group, this decision has placed the spotlight on Nigeria’s handling of the case.

IPOB also raised the issue of jurisdiction, arguing that under Nigerian law, an offence must be recognised as a crime in both countries involved before a trial can proceed. The group insisted that the process used to return Kanu to Nigeria violated international law and legal procedures.

The group said transferring individuals across borders must follow proper legal channels, and that any trial resulting from an unlawful transfer is questionable. They warned that ignoring international rules could damage the credibility of Nigeria’s legal system.

Despite these concerns, IPOB said it still believes the presiding judge is capable of handling the case fairly. The group expressed hope that the court would resist pressure and focus only on the facts presented in open court.

IPOB urged the court to uphold the law and not allow the case to be influenced by politics or external forces. The group again called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that the case against him lacks legal merit and that his continued detention is unjust.
