Keyamo Slams Atiku Over PDP Resignation Letter

Festus Keyamo has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for using Nigeria’s coat of arms in his resignation letter from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying it violates federal law and shows poor judgment.

The aviation minister took issue with both the timing and content of the letter, which surfaced online on Wednesday — just days after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Keyamo said the move was insensitive, especially during the week of national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu.

“Atiku’s obsession with his presidential ambition knows no empathy,” Keyamo said in a statement. “He typed, signed, and delivered the letter just a day after Buhari’s death was announced.”

Keyamo, also a lawyer, said Atiku’s use of the national coat of arms was both “morally and legally wrong,” citing Section 6 of the Flag and Coat of Arms Act, which prohibits its use in private or political communications without a license.

“It borders on impersonation,” he said. “Former government officials using national symbols in their personal letters would only cause confusion.”

He said Atiku ceased to hold any federal office 18 years ago and has no authority to use the symbol in official-looking documents.
