President Bola Tinubu has formed an inter-ministerial committee to manage the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London.

The committee is led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and is responsible for planning and executing a state burial that reflects Buhari’s stature as a former head of state.

The committee includes key government officials and top security chiefs. Members include the Ministers of Finance, Defence, Information, Works, Interior, FCT, Housing, Culture, and Health, along with the National Security Adviser, Inspector General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Chief of Defence Staff.

To allow Nigerians and the international community to offer their condolences, special condolence registers are to be opened in Abuja. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre will host central registers for foreign diplomats and the public. In addition, President Tinubu has ordered that all ministries, departments, and agencies across the country set up condolence registers at their main entrances.
Further announcements are expected in the coming days as the government finalises arrangements for the funeral. Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 and as military ruler in the 1980s, is expected to receive full state honours.
