The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has mourned the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who stood by workers and ordinary Nigerians, especially during his time as a civilian president.

The tribute came in a condolence message from NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who reflected on Buhari’s relationship with labour unions over the years. He recalled that while Buhari’s military regime had a harsh stance on unions, his return as a civilian leader marked a shift in approach toward the welfare of workers.

During his presidency from 2015 to 2023, Buhari avoided mass retrenchments, even during periods of economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. He reportedly gave financial support to state governments on several occasions, enabling them to pay salaries and clear pension backlogs. Although many governors were accused of misusing the funds, the NLC acknowledged Buhari’s repeated efforts to ensure workers were paid.

Ajaero also pointed out that while Buhari did increase fuel prices during his tenure, he resisted pressure to privatise the country’s refineries or allow further devaluation of the naira. These actions, according to the NLC, showed that Buhari made efforts to protect national assets and maintain some level of economic stability for the average citizen.
The NLC expressed sympathy to the late president’s family, especially his wife, Aisha Buhari, and extended their prayers for comfort in this time of loss. They described Buhari’s death as painful and said the union recognises the role he played in keeping workers’ interests in view throughout his civilian leadership.
Labour leaders called on Nigerians to remember Buhari for his attempts to put the nation first and for his commitment to keeping workers in employment during tough times.
