A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by Nafiu Bala Gombe has warned former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar against presenting himself as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The faction also denied reaching any agreement to form an alliance, merger or coalition with the G-100 Coalition, accusing Atiku and some members of the group of attempting to pressure its leadership into an arrangement that could undermine the party’s independence.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Gombe said the ADC would contest the 2027 elections independently and would not allow individuals pursuing personal political ambitions to determine its future.
The warning comes amid a leadership dispute within the party, with two factions laying claim to its leadership. One is led by former Senate President David Mark, whose leadership is currently recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while Gombe’s faction is challenging the takeover in court.
Gombe alleged that Atiku and some members of the G-100 Coalition had held behind-the-scenes discussions aimed at compelling the ADC to enter into an alliance ahead of the elections.
He maintained that the party had no intention of entering into any political arrangement with another party before the 2027 polls.
The faction described the alleged efforts as political pressure and manipulation designed to force the ADC into a merger or alliance against its wishes.
Gombe reiterated that the party would not participate in any alliance, merger or coalition with another political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
