NDC to Inaugurate Obi, Kwankwaso Campaign Council

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said the decision followed consultations among its national leadership, presidential candidate Peter Obi, running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and stakeholders across the country.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party said Obi and Kwankwaso had held several meetings with the national leader and other members of the leadership over the composition of the campaign council.

The party has authorised the presidential candidate and his running mate to nominate several key officials for the campaign structure. The positions include Director-General, Deputy Director-General for the North, spokesman, deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director.

According to the party, the nominations will be made in consultation with the leadership, while other stakeholders are also expected to contribute to the final composition of the council.

The NDC said a full structure for the campaign had already been prepared since August and presented to Obi and Kwankwaso for their input. It added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders in different parts of the country.

The party said it would announce and inaugurate the Presidential Campaign Council after receiving the candidates’ input. It also disclosed that a campaign timetable had been proposed, with arrangements for funding and fundraising still being concluded.

The NDC said funds raised for the campaign would be paid into the presidential campaign account and managed by officials nominated by the presidential candidate, his running mate and the party’s national treasurer. It said the arrangement was intended to support transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with electoral requirements.

The inauguration was initially planned for the first week of September but was postponed because of Obi’s travel schedule.

The party also urged its candidates and supporters to avoid internal disputes and concentrate on their campaigns ahead of the elections. It said there was no need for internal battles and called on members to work towards securing victories for the party at all levels.

As part of preparations for the elections, the NDC directed its state and local government chairmen to begin meetings with candidates and other stakeholders to compile lists of party agents.

The party said two separate sets of agents should be prepared, with one covering the National Assembly elections and another covering the governorship and State Assembly elections.

The lists will be reviewed and approved by the party leadership, including Obi and Kwankwaso, before the agents undergo training. The NDC directed that the process should be completed and the final lists submitted within two weeks.

The committee responsible for coordinating the appointment of party agents is chaired by Deputy National Chairman (South), Babatunde Alli, with Vin Martin Ilo serving as secretary. Yunusa Tanko, Nafiu Dankura and the national vice chairmen representing the six geopolitical zones are also members of the committee.
