Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal formally joined the opposition party on Tuesday after meeting with NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, at his residence in Abuja.

The former SGF had resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on June 1 following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
Before joining the NDC, Lawal had expressed support for a possible Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket. He also backed Obi during the 2023 presidential election when the former Anambra State governor contested under the Labour Party.

Speaking after his defection, Lawal said his decision was driven by his concerns about the country’s economic and security challenges.
He said Nigerians concerned about insecurity, hunger, poor access to education and disease should support a political platform that, in his view, offers a different direction for the country.
Lawal said he had chosen to work with the NDC in support of the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
He expressed confidence in the political project and said he looked forward to the inauguration of a new administration on May 29, 2027, if the ticket succeeds at the polls.
