The union said the action was taken in line with the standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council on the non-payment of salaries.

Under the resolution, ASUU branches are empowered to withdraw their services when members’ salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of the following month.

The UNIZIK chapter said September 7 had passed without members receiving their complete August salaries, describing the situation as a recurring problem that had affected lecturers on more than three occasions.

Following the congress decision, all academic and administrative activities by members of the union are to be suspended.

The strike will continue until the university pays the outstanding portion of the August 2026 salary to all affected members.

The union called on the university authorities to urgently resolve the salary issue and prevent a recurrence.

It also appealed to the university’s Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, to intervene in the matter and ensure that the affected lecturers receive their full salaries.

ASUU said the industrial action was solely connected to the incomplete payment of the August salary and would remain in force until the issue was resolved.

When contacted for a reaction, the Director of Information and Public Relations of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment on the development.
