Prominent Nigerian Traditional Ruler Dies

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, has died in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 91.

The death of the monarch was announced on Thursday by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, in a condolence message.

According to Pantami, the emir died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after spending nearly 46 years on the throne. He became the Emir of Gumel on December 16, 1980.

Pantami described the late traditional ruler as a respected scholar and a source of guidance to his people. He said the monarch dedicated his long reign to promoting peace, education and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Gumel people.

The former minister also noted the long history of the Gumel Emirate, describing it as one of the oldest traditional institutions in northern Nigeria.

The emirate, established in the 18th century, has played an important role in scholarship, governance and community development. The area has produced several scholars, jurists and leaders who contributed to the intellectual and social development of northern Nigeria.

Pantami said the traditional institution remained an important symbol of peace, unity and cultural heritage in Jigawa State.

He extended his condolences to the deceased monarch’s family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Jigawa State Government and residents of the state.

He prayed for the repose of the emir’s soul and asked Allah to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.

Pantami also prayed for the family, the emirate and the people of Jigawa State to receive the strength to cope with the death of the long-serving monarch.
