According to Atiku, he received information about an alleged plan to administer a fatal injection to Obasanjo during their time in detention. He said he passed the information to the former military ruler and advised him to reject any injection he was offered.
The former Vice-President also linked the alleged incident to the death of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, claiming that a similar method had previously been used against him.
Atiku said his intervention helped protect Obasanjo at a time when both men were in prison and facing difficult circumstances.
The claim comes amid renewed political exchanges between Atiku and Obasanjo as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather pace.
Atiku also accused the former President of turning against him because of his opposition to Obasanjo’s attempt to secure a third term in office.
Obasanjo served as President from 1999 to 2007 and sought constitutional changes that would have allowed him to remain in office beyond the two-term limit. The proposal generated strong opposition from political figures and was eventually unsuccessful.
Atiku and Obasanjo were political allies during the early years of the Fourth Republic, with Atiku serving as Vice-President under Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007. Their relationship later deteriorated, particularly over political and policy disagreements.
Atiku’s latest account adds another dimension to the long-running dispute between the two former political allies.
The ADC presidential candidate is currently campaigning for the 2027 presidential election, which he has already declared will be his final attempt at becoming President.
He has also been seeking to build support among opposition figures and voters ahead of the contest, while presenting his political experience as an advantage in addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
The allegation concerning the prison incident remains Atiku’s account of events, and the claim has not been independently established in the information provided.
