The commission said the decision followed a request from the Oyo State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which sought additional time for political parties to complete the necessary administrative and statutory processes before holding their primaries.

In a statement issued by OYSIEC Chairman, Dr Afees Adeniyi, the commission said IPAC’s request was conveyed in a letter signed by its Secretary, Hon. Dairo Olayinka.
According to the commission, the extension is expected to give participating political parties enough time to organise their internal processes and complete the required documentation before submitting the names of their candidates.
Adeniyi said the commission approved a nine-day extension to ensure that all registered political parties interested in contesting the December 29, 2026, local government elections have adequate time to conclude their primaries.
The original deadline for the exercise was July 27, 2026. Under the revised timetable, political parties now have from July 28 to August 5, 2026, to conduct their primary elections.
He explained that every other activity contained in the election timetable and guidelines remains unchanged, urging political parties to take advantage of the extension and submit the names of their successful candidates within the stipulated period.
The OYSIEC chairman also thanked political parties for their cooperation with the commission and urged them to comply fully with the electoral guidelines during the conduct of their primaries.
