The response came after the El-Rufai Support Group Association announced the hiring of a United States lobbying firm to draw international attention to the case.

The anti-corruption agency said El-Rufai remains in custody under a valid court remand order and rejected claims that politics influenced its actions.

According to the commission, its operations are guided solely by its legal mandate, regardless of a suspect’s political status or public profile.

Meanwhile, the support group engaged Vanguard Africa, a Washington-based advocacy firm, to coordinate outreach to US government officials, lawmakers and democratic institutions.

The group argued that El-Rufai’s case reflects wider concerns about due process and the state of democratic institutions in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

The association maintained the former governor’s innocence and urged international stakeholders to closely monitor developments.

El-Rufai is currently facing allegations linked to abuse of office, fraud and financial misconduct during his time in office, while also being prosecuted over the alleged interception of communications involving the National Security Adviser.
