Nigerian Senate Fast Tracks State Police Proposal

The Senate has pledged to speed up work on the constitutional amendments required to establish state police across Nigeria.

The move comes as concerns grow over increasing cases of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Lawmakers say stronger security measures are needed to tackle threats affecting communities in different parts of the country.

The proposal has gained fresh attention following recent attacks and abductions.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, said the upper chamber is ready to fast-track the legislative process needed to make state policing a reality.

According to him, the Senate is determined to support efforts aimed at improving security and protecting citizens. He stated that lawmakers are committed to ensuring the necessary constitutional steps are completed without unnecessary delays.

The renewed push follows the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, an incident that reignited concerns about the country’s security system.

Supporters of state police believe decentralised policing would improve intelligence gathering, strengthen local security operations and allow faster responses to criminal activities.

They argue that state-controlled police units would work alongside federal agencies to improve public safety.

However, the proposal still requires constitutional approval from the National Assembly and endorsement by at least two-thirds of state Houses of Assembly.

With the Senate reaffirming its support, discussions around state policing are expected to intensify in the coming months.

Many stakeholders see the proposal as part of broader efforts to address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
