Power Sector Is Improving – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has defended his government’s handling of Nigeria’s electricity sector while accepting the APC presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

He said his administration improved power supply, distributed 2.5 million meters and introduced reforms aimed at stabilising the industry.

The President also stated that electricity generation under his government sometimes reached 6,000 megawatts, which he described as an improvement from what his administration inherited.

He added that the government created a N4 trillion bond plan to settle debts owed to power generation and gas companies.

Despite these claims, many Nigerians are still battling long blackouts, rising electricity tariffs and estimated billing.

Reports showed that the national grid collapsed at least 20 times between September 2023 and January 2026, causing repeated nationwide outages and frustration across the country.

Critics and energy experts argued that electricity supply remains too weak for a country of over 200 million people.

They also accused the government of increasing tariffs without delivering stable power, leaving homes and businesses heavily dependent on petrol and diesel generators.
