Court Postpones Jonathan Eligibility Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday adjourned a suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The case was shifted to Monday after delays in service and absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The court noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission did not send any legal representative despite being listed as a defendant.

However, Jonathan and the Attorney-General of the Federation were represented in court during the proceedings.
Justice Peter Lifu expressed concern over the slow progress of the case and ordered tighter timelines for all parties.
He also imposed a fine on the plaintiff and directed that court processes be served within hours to speed up the hearing ahead of the next sitting.
The suit questions Jonathan’s eligibility to run for another presidential term, arguing that his previous years in office place constitutional limits on any further bid.
The matter is set to continue on 18 May 2026 for full hearing of all pending applications.
