Wike’s PDP Faction Clash With Makinde’s Over Leadership

In Nigeria, a fresh dispute has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party after a faction backed by Seyi Makinde approved a caretaker leadership and new primary timetable in Abuja.

The decision was taken at a factional NEC meeting, where members moved to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group endorsed a 13-member interim committee led by Tanimu Turaki and set dates for form sales, screening and primaries.

It also fixed fees for aspirants across offices and introduced concessions for women, youths and persons with disabilities.

The move followed internal efforts to stabilise the party after recent court rulings.

However, a rival bloc aligned with Nyesom Wike rejected the meeting and its resolutions, insisting no valid NEC session was held.

The group dismissed the caretaker committee as unlawful and maintained that existing party leaders remain in charge.

It warned members to ignore decisions from what it described as an unauthorised gathering.

The crisis deepened after the Supreme Court of Nigeria voided an earlier convention linked to the Makinde camp.

While one side argues the party lacks a recognised leadership and needs rebuilding, the opposing faction insists there is no vacuum.

The standoff adds to ongoing tensions as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
