The decision came in a split 3–2 ruling that upheld earlier judgments from lower courts.

The court ruled that the convention breached an order of the Federal High Court, which had stopped the event until Sule Lamido was allowed to contest.

It held that proceeding with the convention despite the order amounted to disobedience and abuse of court process.

The majority judgment affirmed earlier decisions that invalidated the convention which produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as national chairman.

Appeals challenging those rulings were dismissed for lacking merit.

In a related move, the court directed that the leadership dispute in the African Democratic Congress be returned to the Federal High Court for full hearing, setting aside earlier interim orders affecting the party’s leadership.
