Airlines Issues Shutdown Warning Over Jet Fuel Crisis

In Nigeria, airline operators have given a seven-day ultimatum over rising aviation fuel costs, warning that flights may stop nationwide.

The crisis centres on the sharp increase in Jet A1 prices. Operators say the situation has become unsustainable. The warning follows growing tension across the aviation sector.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria said fuel prices have surged by about 250 percent locally, far above global levels. This has pushed operating costs beyond control for many airlines.

Industry players say most expenses are now dollar-based. Access to loans remains difficult due to very high interest rates.

Air Peace chairman Allen Onyema warned that airlines may be forced to suspend operations if nothing changes. Operators said they are under intense financial pressure and cannot keep running at current costs.

Talks between stakeholders have so far failed to produce a solution. Concerns are rising over a possible shutdown.

A meeting led by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo ended without agreement on how to reduce fuel prices. The government has been briefed and discussions are ongoing.

Authorities say more talks will continue in the coming days. For now, airlines insist urgent action is needed to avoid disruption.
