The African Democratic Congress has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of acting without legal backing after it stayed away from the party’s national convention held in Abuja.

Speaking at the convention at Rainbow Event Centre, national secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, said INEC had a duty to monitor the exercise but failed to do so.

He argued that the commission’s position amounted to abandoning its responsibility.

The dispute follows INEC’s earlier decision to stop engaging with factions within the party after a court ruling linked to the leadership crisis.

While INEC cited the need to maintain status quo, the ADC rejected the move and insisted it remained fully recognised under the law.

Aregbesola maintained that the party complied with all notification and documentation requirements, including submissions made within the required time frame.

He also insisted that no court order prevented INEC from attending the convention, describing the commission’s absence as unjustified.
