INEC Records Surge In New Voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission says over 3.4 million Nigerians have joined the voter register during the second phase of its ongoing registration exercise.

The update, released in Abuja, shows that 3,441,121 people completed the process as of April 3.

The commission explained that 2,068,384 citizens registered online, while 1,372,737 others did so physically at centres nationwide.

State figures showed Jigawa leading with 201,047 registrations, followed by Lagos and Kano.
Young people made up the bulk of new voters, with those aged 18 to 34 accounting for over 68 per cent.
Women recorded higher participation, with more than 1.9 million registrations compared to about 1.5 million men.
Students topped the occupational list, while business owners and farmers followed behind.
INEC added that the figures are still subject to verification and urged eligible Nigerians to complete their registration before the deadline.
