In Nigeria, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over unpaid salaries, delayed allowances, and stalled negotiations with the Federal Government.

The warning came after the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at Ekiti State University, where leaders expressed frustration over prolonged talks with no clear outcome.

The union gave the government an ultimatum from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to resolve all outstanding issues.

SSANU said persistent salary delays in federal and some state universities have caused hardship for workers and affected morale across campuses.

The union warned that failure to meet its demands would trigger industrial action alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, raising fears of disruption in the university system.

Beyond wages, SSANU pointed to broader problems, including underfunding, poor infrastructure, and weak research support, saying these issues continue to hold back Nigerian universities.

The union urged the government to act quickly, warning that patience among members is running out and that failure to respond could lead to another shutdown of public universities.
