Authorities said the decision followed reviews of inmate records, focusing on minor offences, long-term detainees, and those eligible for clemency.

The exercise was carried out in collaboration with state governments and relevant justice bodies.

Officials explained that the pardon aims to decongest facilities and give beneficiaries a second chance to reintegrate into society.

Many prisons have faced overcrowding for years, raising concerns about living conditions and rehabilitation.

The development is expected to reduce pressure on correctional centres while encouraging broader reforms within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
