The letter containing the budget request was read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s session.

Lawmakers had earlier suspended sittings to allow committees carry out budget defence meetings.

Under Nigeria’s constitution, the National Assembly holds legislative authority over the Federal Capital Territory.

This makes the approval of the FCT budget the responsibility of the federal legislature before the spending plan can take effect.

The president explained that the proposal focuses on key sectors such as healthcare, education infrastructure, youth empowerment, agriculture and job creation.

According to the plan, the spending programme is expected to support development in the capital and improve the welfare of residents.

The submission begins the legislative review process as relevant committees of the National Assembly will now examine the proposal before it returns to both chambers for final approval.
