FG Faces New Pressure Over El Rufai Case
Pressure is mounting on the Federal Government over the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai after a coalition demanded clarity on his legal status.
The Coalition Political Action Committee, led by its convener Aminu Datti-Ahmed, spoke in Abuja on Sunday, urging authorities to either bring the former governor before a court or release him without delay.
El-Rufai had earlier responded to an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16.
He stayed in the agency’s custody for two days before he was moved to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission for further questioning over alleged financial misconduct.
The coalition said the remand order obtained by investigators had already expired, insisting that prolonged detention without charges goes against constitutional protections and international human rights commitments.
It also warned that the use of state institutions against political figures could raise concerns about fairness in Nigeria’s democracy.
