The family of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has declared his continued detention by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission unlawful, saying the legal order used to keep him in custody has already expired.

In a statement released by his son Mohammed El-Rufai on Friday, the family said the 14-day remand order obtained on February 19 had ended without the anti-graft agency filing charges before a competent court.

They argued that there is currently no valid legal backing for the former governor’s detention.

El-Rufai has been in custody since February 16 after reporting to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and was later transferred to the ICPC two days later.

The commission is investigating allegations involving €1.4 million, over N2.1 billion in payments and additional transfers exceeding N428 million.

While the ICPC maintains that its actions follow the law and its investigative mandate, the family insists the continued detention is unlawful and politically driven, demanding his immediate release.
