INEC Begins Key Election Rule Review

The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun a fresh review of its 2022 political parties’ guidelines as preparations quietly build toward the next election cycle.

The process started during a technical workshop held in Ikot Ekpene, where officials gathered to examine how existing rules guiding political parties can be updated.

INEC chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the review is necessary after the passage of the Electoral Act 2026, which President Bola Tinubu approved in February.

According to him, the new law shortens several timelines, creating a tighter operational space that requires the commission to adjust its regulations so they align with the updated legal framework.

Amupitan explained that the exercise also seeks to deal with problems inside political parties, especially disputes and weak internal democracy.

He warned that when candidates emerge through unclear processes, it can lead to voter apathy and a rise in pre-election court battles that often disrupt the electoral calendar.

He added that the commission intends to remain a neutral umpire while ensuring fair competition among parties.

At the workshop, Westminster Foundation for Democracy country director Adebowale Olorunmola noted that the 2022 guidelines helped during the 2023 elections but said changing political realities now demand stronger rules.

Akwa Ibom Resident Electoral Commissioner Obo Effanga also backed the review, saying the new electoral law makes it necessary for INEC to update its party regulations.
