Students of Nursing Science at the University of Calabar have staged a protest after the Vice-Chancellor shut the admission portal over overcrowding and directed affected candidates to rewrite the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The decision triggered anger on campus, with many students describing it as unfair and disruptive.

The action followed concerns that the department had admitted more students than approved by regulatory bodies.

University authorities said the move was necessary to address the excess intake and align with accreditation limits, even if it meant reversing earlier admissions.

Students, however, gathered in protest, insisting they had followed due process and should not suffer for what they called an administrative lapse.

Some argued that asking them to sit for another JAMB examination places an extra burden on families already struggling with costs.

As tensions rose, the university maintained that the step was taken in the interest of standards and compliance.

It remains unclear whether further talks will hold to resolve the standoff and determine the fate of the affected students.
