Atiku, Obi And Amaechi Push Back Against Senate

In Abuja on Thursday, opposition leaders demanded an urgent review of the Electoral Act 2026, warning that parts of the law could affect the 2027 general elections.

Figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi backed the call, while the Senate rejected any fresh amendment.

The dispute centres on changes signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 18. The new Act limits parties to direct primaries and consensus, shortens campaign timelines and adjusts funding schedules for INEC.

Opposition parties argue that these changes restrict internal party choices and raise concerns about result transmission rules.

At a press briefing, NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed said the law weakens transparency and gives too much discretion to presiding officers.

He cited past statements from former INEC officials who maintained that electronic transmission can work even with network challenges.

The opposition also questioned the reduction in preparation time for elections.

Reacting, Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu advised critics to channel proposals through lawmakers rather than stir tension.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu said only the National Assembly has the power to amend the Act and urged politicians to prepare for 2027 instead of fuelling unrest.

The exchange signals growing political friction as the next election cycle draws closer.
