ADC Raises Alarm Over New INEC Timetable

The African Democratic Congress has rejected the newly unveiled 2026 to 2027 election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, claiming it was designed to benefit the ruling government ahead of the next general polls.

The party made its position public on Friday through a statement shared on X by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

Abdullahi argued that the schedule, presented as a routine administrative update, is in fact “a political instrument carefully structured to narrow democratic space and strengthen the hand of the incumbent administration.”

He maintained that fair elections require equal conditions for all contestants and warned that giving one party what he described as a one-year head start creates “a rigged and corrupt system.”

The party said it had joined other opposition groups in rejecting what it called the “corrupted Electoral Act 2026,” insisting that any timetable drawn from the law cannot be accepted.

It further alleged that both the legislation and the schedule appear tailored to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “automatic self-succession project” ahead of 2027.

Stating that it would not legitimise what it views as a flawed process, the ADC disclosed that it is weighing political and legal options and will announce its next move soon.

It added that “ADC will not do anything that will appear to confer legitimacy on a fraudulent system,” while urging Nigerians and civil society groups to demand transparency.

INEC has not yet issued a response to the claims.
