The bid places Nigeria among nations seeking election to the Geneva-based body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.

If successful, the country would join other member states in reviewing human rights records and shaping international policy on related issues.

Officials said the move reflects Nigeria’s desire to contribute more actively to global efforts on justice, equality and the rule of law.

They also pointed to ongoing domestic reforms and cooperation with international partners as part of the campaign for support.

The election for council membership is conducted by the United Nations General Assembly, with successful countries serving fixed terms.

Nigeria’s declaration now sets the stage for diplomatic engagement ahead of the vote.
