Court Date Set For ADC Deregistration Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed February 24, 2026, to hear a case seeking the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress and several other political parties.

The suit was brought by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators against the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Attorney-General of the Federation and five parties.

The case, initially scheduled before Justice Peter Lifu, was not heard on its first date and was pushed forward.

The plaintiffs argue that some registered parties have failed to meet the constitutional requirements needed to remain recognised under the law.

They claim the affected parties did not secure the minimum votes or win any elective seats as required in past elections.

The group is asking the court to determine whether INEC is bound to remove such parties from the register and stop them from taking part in future polls, including the 2027 general elections.

According to court filings, the plaintiffs want INEC compelled to enforce the constitutional benchmarks strictly.

Justice Lifu has adjourned the matter to February 24 for further proceedings as the dispute over party eligibility moves to the next stage.
