The Christian Association Of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger State has opposed the proposed Niger State Hisbah Directorates Bill, calling it controversial and a potential source of heightened religious tension.

The state chapter expressed concern that the legislation could deepen divisions among religious communities and undermine social cohesion.

CAN officials argued that introducing a formal Hisbah Directorate may fuel conflict rather than foster peace, warning that it could create an environment of mistrust between Christians and Muslims in the state.

They urged lawmakers to reconsider the bill and ensure policies promote unity and mutual respect.

The association stressed that any law perceived to favour one religion over another risks destabilising communal relations.

CAN said the state government should focus on inclusive policies that safeguard the rights and freedoms of all residents.

Religious leaders and civil society groups are now expected to engage with the state legislature to discuss the potential impact of the bill, seeking dialogue to prevent escalation of tensions.
