Kwara Governor Faces Heat Over FCT Election Support
The Governor of Kwara State has drawn criticism after declaring his support for candidates backing President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming Federal Capital Territory Area Councils election, regardless of their party affiliation.
Political observers and opposition figures argue that the statement undermines the independence of the electoral process and raises concerns over the use of political influence to sway voters.
The governor made the remarks while attending a public event in Abuja, emphasising his intention to back pro-Tinubu candidates.
The comments have stirred debate over fairness in the FCT polls, scheduled for February 21, with critics warning that such endorsements could distort the competitive landscape and marginalise candidates not aligned with the president.
Supporters of the governor contend that backing candidates who share the president’s agenda ensures policy continuity and national unity, while opponents see it as an overreach that risks politicising local elections.
