Kuje Prison Under Fire Over Alleged Extortion

A lawyer has petitioned the head of the Nigerian Correctional Service, accusing officials at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja of forcing inmates to pay for basic rights.

The petition was filed on February 11, 2026, by Mr Bala I. Dakum, who said he represents more than 100 inmates at the facility.
He alleged that the Officer-in-Charge and two aides demanded money from inmates and their families for medical care, movement within the centre and humane treatment.
Dakum claimed the acts were done with approval from senior officials, creating fear and exploitation inside the prison.

The lawyer warned that tension is rising among inmates and could spiral if nothing is done.
He called for an independent probe, forensic checks on the officers’ accounts and their redeployment during investigations.
He also said he is ready to present evidence if requested.
The Correctional Service confirmed it had received the petition and ordered a full investigation.
While officials promised the matter would be handled properly, the officer named in the complaint denied any wrongdoing, insisting the claims were false.
