Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Senate for throwing out a proposal that would have made the real-time electronic transmission of election results compulsory, saying the move weakens Nigeria’s democracy and public confidence in elections.

He spoke through a statement released by his media office on Wednesday.

His reaction followed the Senate’s decision to reject an amendment to Clause 70(3) of the Electoral Amendment Bill.

The change would have required results to be sent electronically as votes are counted, but lawmakers chose to keep the existing law, which allows results to be transmitted in a way determined by the electoral body.
Atiku said the decision showed a lack of readiness to open elections to full public scrutiny.
He argued that relying on the old provision creates room for interference and disputes, insisting that technology is now central to credible elections worldwide.
He added that Nigerians deserve elections that are transparent and free from manipulation, warning that anything less amounts to a betrayal of democracy.
