FCTA IHS Clean Air Project Reaches Gwagwalada

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in partnership with IHS Nigeria, has rolled out its Project Breathe Clean Air–Abuja to Gwagwalada Area Council, distributing free cooking gas equipment and enrolling residents in insurance and health schemes.

The intervention, carried out on Wednesday, targeted vulnerable households, with about 400 gas cylinders and burners given out to women-led homes, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

The project is aimed at reducing respiratory illnesses and environmental damage caused by the use of firewood and charcoal.
Speaking at the event, Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, said the initiative was designed to address serious health risks linked to traditional cooking fuels.
She explained that smoke from firewood and charcoal contributes to illnesses such as cough, asthma, pneumonia and eye problems, which mostly affect women, children and the elderly.

She added that the programme goes beyond equipment distribution, focusing on long-term behavioural change.
Beneficiaries received gas refill vouchers to prevent a return to charcoal due to cost, as well as insurance coverage for fire outbreaks, explosions, user injury and theft.
Participants were also enrolled in basic health insurance schemes.
Dr Fasawe urged community leaders to support the programme by discouraging the resale of donated cylinders, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines and providing feedback to help improve the project.
Representing IHS Nigeria, Chief Corporate Services Officer Dapo Otunla said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to people, the environment and economic growth.
He noted that the partnership supports cleaner energy use, lower carbon emissions and improved community well-being.
Otunla called on other corporate organisations to adopt similar initiatives, saying the Gwagwalada rollout should serve as a model for expansion across Abuja and beyond.
