Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja to challenge his life sentence over terrorism offences.

The appeal was filed on February 4, 2026, against the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court that convicted him in November 2025.

The case stems from charges brought by the Federal Government, which led to Kanu’s conviction on seven terrorism-related counts and a life sentence.

The offences included acts linked to terrorism and a broadcast allegedly made in May 2021 that authorities said threatened public safety through a sit-at-home order.
In his appeal, Kanu argued that the trial court acted wrongly by passing sentence without giving him the chance to speak in his own defence before sentencing.
He also claimed the court failed to weigh key factors that could have reduced the punishment, insisting that the maximum sentence was imposed without proper consideration.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria is listed as the respondent in the appeal, which marks Kanu’s latest legal push from detention.
