What prompted the intervention was growing tension following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s decision to shut the market.
The elders said peace, not conflict, is needed in Onitsha, a major trading hub, especially at a time when security has improved across Anambra and neighbouring states.

The council noted that traders and residents have largely remained calm since the closure and praised their restraint, saying the situation does not require confrontation or threats to public order.
The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide, acting in continuity with the long-established tradition of Igbo elders intervening at moments of communal strain to preserve peace, dialogue, and social cohesion.
The council further noted that such disputes are not new and are best resolved through talks. It warned that allowing the issue to grow could harm unity, trade, and public peace.
The elders added that unity is vital at this point in Igbo history and pledged to keep engaging all parties until calm and normal life returns.
