The decision was taken on January 20 by the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun after reports and petitions raised fears about how the succession process was unfolding in Ijebu-Ode.

The directive was sent through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to the Ijebu-Ode Local Government chairman, with instructions to inform the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa ruling house to suspend all activities.

The government said the move was necessary to prevent tension and protect public order, especially given the status of the Awujale stool and the attention surrounding the selection of a successor to the late Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled for over six decades.

The suspension comes amid growing controversy, including legal action by Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde over his exclusion from the race and fresh security steps that redirected nominees to the DSS office, effectively freezing the process until further notice.
