The Federal Capital Territory Administration has taken action to remove 607 beggars and mentally challenged individuals from the streets of Abuja between July 2025 and January 2026.

Most of those removed were identified as beggars, with a smaller group classified as mentally challenged. Officials said the individuals were counselled, profiled, and subsequently returned to their home states through collaboration with state liaison offices, where they are expected to receive rehabilitation support.
Authorities noted that some of the displaced individuals return to Abuja after removal, often due to insecurity or economic difficulties in their home states. The operation continues to track and remove those who resurface, ensuring that public spaces remain orderly.
The programme involves several FCT agencies working together under Operation Sweep. The initiative was launched by Minister Nyesom Wike to address public safety risks, reduce crime, and maintain a clean city environment.
Authorities warned that beggars and street miscreants can be linked to criminal networks or fall victim to kidnappings and ritual crimes.
