Former presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to suspend the rollout of Nigeria’s newly gazetted tax laws, warning that the framework contains errors and gaps that could harm citizens and businesses.

He made the call after reviewing a report by KPMG Nigeria, which pointed to dozens of problem areas in the new tax regime, including issues around share taxation, dividends, foreign exchange deductions, and the obligations of non-resident companies.
Obi said the concerns surfaced after expert reviews and private engagements, raising worries that ordinary Nigerians may struggle to understand or comply with the new rules without clear guidance or public education.

He criticised the process that produced the laws, noting that wide consultations with businesses, workers, and civil society were missing, even as Nigerians continue to face high food prices, rising transport costs, and shrinking incomes.
In response, the chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, defended the reforms, saying many of the concerns raised were based on policy misunderstandings and that the new framework reflects deliberate choices aimed at long-term reform.
