The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has taken the Independent National Electoral Commission to court over claims that ₦55.9 billion meant for the 2019 general election cannot be properly accounted for.

SERAP said the money was allocated for items such as smart card readers, ballot papers, and result sheets, but audit records showed gaps, irregular payments, and missing documents. The group is asking the court to compel INEC to explain how the funds were used and to name all contractors involved.
According to the audit, some payments were made without proper approval or proof of delivery, while others exceeded market prices.

SERAP warned that unresolved questions around election spending could weaken trust in future polls. The organisation said INEC must be open about its finances to protect voters’ rights and ensure credible elections, adding that anyone found responsible should face prosecution and refunds should be made to the public treasury.
