Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has spoken out against the arrest of activist Abubakar Salim Musa, accusing the federal government under President Bola Tinubu of silencing critical voices across the country.

The arrest followed Musa’s public comments on the worsening security situation in Northern Nigeria and other parts of the country. Amnesty International Nigeria reported that he was taken into custody over his views, describing the action as unlawful and unjustified.

Atiku said the activist committed no offence, stating that speaking about insecurity is a right protected by the Nigerian Constitution. He faulted the authorities for choosing arrest instead of addressing the concerns being raised by citizens.
He warned that Musa’s case reflects a wider pattern, claiming that journalists, entertainers, students, and even corps members have faced harassment or detention for expressing opinions about the government or the president’s family.

With the country moving toward another election season, Atiku said fear and repression could weaken democracy and limit political participation. He called for the immediate release of Musa and others held for expressing their views, while urging both local authorities and the international community to act against what he described as growing pressure on free speech in Nigeria.
