Gombe Supports Families of 7 Dead Journalists

Families of seven journalists who lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Gombe State have received financial support from the state government following the tragedy that shocked the media community.

The incident happened on December 29, 2025, along the Billiri Kumo Road as the journalists were returning from a wedding ceremony in Kaltungo. The crash claimed seven lives and left others injured.

Gombe State Government approved a total of N14 million for the affected families, with each family receiving N2 million to help with burial arrangements and other urgent needs linked to the loss.
The support was presented on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, who said the gesture was meant to show care and reduce the burden on the grieving families.

The government also disclosed that it had earlier given assistance to injured victims and is currently paying medical bills for those still receiving treatment, while offering condolences to the NUJ, NTA, and the wider media community.
Media leaders and family representatives praised the move, describing it as rare and thoughtful, while calling for stronger welfare and insurance protection for journalists across the country.
