The Federal High Court in Abuja is set to decide on January 7 whether former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, his wife, and his son will be granted bail in an ongoing money laundering case.

The case involves Malami, his wife Bashir Asabe, and his son Abubakar Abdulaziz, who are standing trial following charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The court fixed the date after hearing arguments from both the defence and the prosecution.
The EFCC accused the trio of engaging in suspicious financial dealings involving large sums of money over several years. The alleged activities include moving funds through bank accounts and acquiring properties in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi.

The anti-graft agency said the transactions were carried out between 2015 and 2025, a period that covers Malami’s time as Nigeria’s chief law officer under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly worked together to hide the source of funds believed to be proceeds of unlawful activities, using family members and indirect channels.
The court is expected to rule on the bail requests on the scheduled date, while the trial continues under Nigeria’s money laundering laws.
